Beyond the slopes: Gudauri in summer

Gudauri's summer is shorter than the calendar suggests. The green season is usually described as June to September, but the lifts run for a narrower window inside it: the resort operator opened the Gudauri summer lifts on 18 July in 2026, and the summer before that one closed on 20 September 2025.

If a gondola ride is part of why you are coming, that window is the thing to plan the trip around. Everything else about a summer here follows from it.

When does the Gudauri gondola run in summer?

The Mountain Trails Agency, which operates Georgia's four mountain resorts, publishes its summer schedule the same way it publishes the winter one.

For summer 2026 it opened on 18 July, running four lifts daily from 11:00 to 17:00. Note the hour: summer opening is 11:00, an hour later than the 10:00 winter start, so a summer morning up there begins later than a winter one.

Among the four is the line over to Kobi, which the operator describes as a 45 minute scenic ride and which drops you on the far side of the pass, towards Stepantsminda. In summer that is less a lift than an outing, and it is the single best argument for timing a trip inside the lift window.

The reason early summer is uncertain is maintenance. The lifts come down between seasons for inspection and work, and the summer start date is set each year by how that goes. So June can be beautiful on the ground and have nothing running above it.

The practical rule: never build a summer day around the gondola without checking that it is turning. Ask us and we will confirm what is open for your dates rather than guessing from last year.

What is actually best about each summer month

The four months are not interchangeable, and choosing between them is mostly a question of what you are willing to trade.

June

Green, empty and wet. The meadows come up, the rivers run hardest with snowmelt, and there is often still snow lying on the high ground early in the month. It is also the wettest month of the Gudauri year in the long-term climate records, and the lifts are usually still in maintenance.

Come in June for quiet and for water, not for a cable car.

July

The month the summer properly starts. Wildflowers are at their best, the lifts came on stream mid-month in 2026, and the days are long. If you want the full menu of the resort open at once, the second half of July is the earliest it reliably happens.

August

The warmest and the busiest, particularly with families travelling from the Gulf and the Levant to get out of forty-degree heat. Everything is running. Book it early, because eleven apartments do not go far in August.

September

The quiet end. It is the driest of the four months and the nights turn genuinely cold. The summer lift season closed on 20 September in 2025, so a September trip is a question of which half of the month you take.

How a summer day here actually behaves

At altitude the settled part of the day is the morning, and the sensible pattern is to put the ambitious thing first and keep the afternoon flexible. That is the same discipline a ski day here needs, for the same reason.

Two other things catch people out.

• The sun is much stronger than the temperature implies. At two thousand metres you can burn on a day when you are wearing a fleece. Sunscreen is not an optional item in a Caucasus summer.
• The evenings are cold. The temperature drops away quickly once the sun is off the slope, and by September you will want a proper jacket after dinner rather than a layer you brought for the look of it.

What Gudauri in summer is not

Being straight about this saves disappointment, and it is the part the brochures skip.

It is a working ski resort out of season. That means the mountain is spectacular and the infrastructure is quiet: not every restaurant, shop and rental outfit that operates in February is open in July, and which ones are open changes from year to year. It is also not a holiday you can do on foot alone. Walking gets you to the trails, the gondola and the cluster of cafes in New Gudauri. Anything further, the Truso valley, Stepantsminda, Ananuri on the way back to Tbilisi, needs a vehicle. And it is not a beach. What Gudauri offers in summer is air, altitude, space and enormous scenery, in a country where the food is a reason to come on its own. If that is the holiday you want, it is very hard to beat on price. If you wanted a lake, this is not one.

How to shape a summer week

A week here works better as a rhythm than as a list.

• Two active days, ideally early in the week while you are fresh: a long hike, a ride, a paragliding flight if the air is right.
• One long day north, towards Stepantsminda and the Gergeti ridge, with a driver arranged in advance.
• One slow day, on the meadows above the resort or on a terrace with a book.
• One day held back, unplanned, and spent on whatever the weather makes possible.

The short version

Late July to early September is the reliable window if you want everything open, including the lifts. June is the quiet, wet, green option for people who do not need a gondola. September is beautiful and colder, and the lift season ends inside it.
