When to ski Gudauri: the season month by month

The Gudauri season runs from around December to April. That is a long window, and the difference between the ends of it is significant. Choosing the right month matters more than most people realise, because you are not choosing between good and bad, you are choosing what to trade.

December

The season opens and the resort wakes up.

Early December is the gamble. The base is still building, not everything is necessarily open, and conditions depend entirely on how the first snowfalls have gone. What you get in exchange is a quiet mountain and the lowest prices of the season.

By mid-December things are usually established. And then the last ten days of the month change completely.

The New Year period is the single busiest week in Gudauri. Georgian, regional and international demand all arrive at once. Accommodation across the resort books out well in advance, prices are at their peak, and the slopes are the most crowded they will be all winter. The atmosphere is genuinely excellent if that is what you want. If it is not, avoid the week entirely and come in mid-January instead.

Book New Year by early autumn. This is not a sales line, it is simply how that week behaves.

January

The coldest month, and for many people the best snow of the season.

The first week is still holiday season, including Orthodox Christmas, which keeps demand high in Georgia and the wider region. After that, the resort settles into something wonderful. Mid to late January is cold, reliable and comparatively quiet.

The trade is temperature and daylight. It is properly cold, and the days are still short. Bring more layers than you think and expect the light to go earlier than you would like.

If your priority is snow quality with fewer people, mid-to-late January is the answer.

February

The most consistently reliable month, and the busiest outside New Year.

The base is deep, the days are getting noticeably longer, and the weather is at its most dependable. This is the month where you are least likely to be disappointed by conditions.

The catch is half-term. School holidays across several markets fall in February, and the resort feels it. If you have school-age children you may have no choice, and February is genuinely the right month to be here, but book early. If you are free to choose, the weeks either side of half-term give you February conditions without February crowds.

March

Increasingly the connoisseur's month, and our own quiet favourite.

You get a deep base built up over the whole winter, longer days, and noticeably warmer sun. Skiing in March in Gudauri can be a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance exercise. The terraces come alive. The crowds have thinned. The light is beautiful.

The trade is that snow quality becomes more variable through the day. Mornings are firm and fast, afternoons soften. You adapt by starting earlier and finishing earlier, which is no hardship when the sun is out.

For a combination of good conditions, good weather and space on the mountain, March is very hard to beat.

April

The long goodbye, and a very particular pleasure.

Spring skiing at altitude, warm sun, very few people, and the lowest prices of the year outside early December. Not everything will be running as the month goes on, and the snow is a spring snow rather than a winter one, so timing your day matters more.

April is not the month for a first-time skier chasing a guaranteed week. For someone who knows what spring conditions are and enjoys them, it is a bargain.

Choosing by what you actually want

• Best snow quality: mid to late January
• Most reliable all round: February, avoiding half-term if you can
• Best combination of weather, snow and space: March
• Atmosphere and celebration: the New Year period, booked far ahead
• Lowest cost: early December or April
• Fewest people: mid-January, or late in the season

Why booking early is not just an upsell

Two things about Gudauri make early booking genuinely worth it rather than merely advisable.

First, the peak weeks are concentrated. New Year, Orthodox Christmas and February half-term account for a disproportionate share of the season's demand, and they sell out in that order.

Second, and this applies specifically to us, the Altimera collection is eleven apartments. Not eleven hundred. When a date goes, it is gone, and there is no second inventory behind it. Guests who booked with us before tend to take their weeks early, which means the calendar fills from the inside out.

If your winter depends on a specific week, treat it as a deadline rather than a plan.

The short version

Come in March if you can choose freely. Come in February if you are tied to school holidays and book it early. Come in mid-January if snow quality is what you care about most. Come at New Year if you want the atmosphere, and book it now.
