Gudauri ski rental: what to book and bring

You can rent skis, boots and poles, or a snowboard, in Gudauri on the day you arrive. The resort has seven rental shops, most of them a few minutes from the lifts, and none of them needs booking weeks ahead. What is worth deciding before you travel is whether to rent at all, what a set should include, and the few things that are better brought from home than hired here.

Altimera manages and lets eleven studio apartments in New Gudauri and keeps a directory of local businesses so guests can see who does what before they arrive. The rental shops in it are independent: you book your gear with the shop, not with us. Altimera does not arrange ski passes, equipment hire or lessons, and it does not operate or arrange transport. What follows is simply how rental works here, so you can walk into the right shop already knowing what to ask.

Where do you rent skis in Gudauri?

The directory lists seven rental shops and four ski schools in and around Gudauri, most clustered near the gondola and the New Gudauri meeting point rather than strung down the valley. A short walk to the shop matters more than it sounds, because you carry skis and boots for that walk twice a day. Aviator Ski runs a rental and service shop in New Gudauri, and the Ski Gudauri school runs its own rental shop; both are listed with their phone numbers, so you can call ahead and check stock. The rest are a mix of shops at the hotels and small huts by the cable-car stations. From the Altimera apartments the gondola is a 3.5 minute walk, so heavy gear is less of a burden here than at resorts where the base is a bus ride from the lift.

What does a rental set include?

A standard set is skis, boots and poles, or a board and boots. Helmets are usually a small extra rather than part of the set; most shops have them, and you should take one. Clothing is not included: a few shops sell jackets, gloves and goggles, but rental of outerwear is patchy, so plan to bring your own. If you ride a snowboard, say so when you call, because board stock is thinner than ski stock and the better boots go first. Ask the shop to fit the boots properly and to set the ski bindings to your weight and level; a rushed fitting is the single most common reason a first day hurts.

How much does ski rental in Gudauri cost?

Rental is priced by the day and drops sharply by the week, and shops quote in Georgian lari. Prices move from season to season and the current-season rates are not always posted before the lifts open, so the honest answer is to get today's figure from the shop directly rather than trust a number written down last winter. As a rule of thumb, a full set for a week costs far less than seven single days bought separately, and for a trip of a few days renting here is almost always cheaper than flying with your own skis once you add airline ski-bag fees. Buying gear locally only makes sense if you are staying for the whole season.

What should you book ahead, and what can you skip?

For most of the season you can walk in and be fitted in about twenty minutes. Two periods are the exception. The first is the New Year and Orthodox Christmas fortnight, since Georgia keeps Christmas on 7 January and the resort fills for it. The second is the February high season, the busiest weeks of the year. In those weeks, call the shop a day or two ahead, give heights, weights and boot sizes, and ask them to put gear aside for you. Outside them, booking ahead buys you very little. If you are taking lessons, the ski school and the rental shop are often the same business or next door to each other, so book the lesson first and let the school steer you to the gear that suits it.

What is worth bringing from home?

  • A helmet, if you own one that fits. Rental helmets are fine, but one you have worn before fits better and you know its history.
  • Goggles and gloves. Cheap to pack, and often thin or picked over in rental stock by mid-season.
  • Proper ski socks. One or two pairs. Cotton socks in stiff rental boots are how you get blisters and cold feet.
  • Custom insoles, if you use them. They drop straight into rental boots and fix most fit complaints on the spot.
  • A small cable lock. Some shops store your gear overnight, which saves carrying it back to the apartment; where they do not, a lock lets you leave skis on a rack while you eat.

None of this is essential, and you can buy most of it in the resort if you forget. But goggles, gloves and socks are the items rental stock handles worst, and they are the cheapest to bring.

When in the season are the shops open?

Gudauri sits at 2,200 metres, and reliable snow runs from roughly late December into April; our month-by-month guide covers when each stretch of the season is at its best. Rental shops open with the lifts and close when they do, so at the very start and the very end of the season it is worth a phone call to confirm a shop is trading before you rely on it. For lift hours, night skiing and how the pass itself works, see the Gudauri ski pass explained.

Renting for the first time

If this is your first time on snow, rent rather than buy, keep the set simple (skis, boots, poles and a helmet), and treat the lesson as the first decision rather than the gear; the school will make sure what you are given suits a beginner. Is Gudauri good for beginners? covers the terrain in more detail, and what to pack for a week in Gudauri runs through the clothing the rental shop will not hand you.

The simplest way to start is to open the directory, pick two or three shops near the lifts, and call the day before you want your gear. You book directly with the shop: the rental, the fitting and the price are settled between you and the business, not with Altimera. If you are staying with us and are not sure which shop is closest to your apartment, ask us on WhatsApp and we will point you the right way.

One last piece of arithmetic. If you are up here often enough that renting a set every time stops adding up, Altimera lets its apartments for the whole ski season as well, 15 December to 15 April, and at that point owning your own gear and leaving it in the apartment starts to beat the rental counter.
