Is Gudauri good for beginners?
Gudauri is a good place to learn to ski, and the reason is the shape of the mountain: it sits entirely above the treeline, so the runs are wide and the step up from a nursery slope to a real piste is gradual rather than abrupt. The catch is that the beginner terrain is not gathered in one corner. It is spread across five separate places, which makes your first two days partly about reading the mountain and not only about learning to turn.
Where the beginner terrain actually is
Vagabond Ski School, which has taught in Gudauri since 2017, lists five beginner areas in its own resort guide: the Pirveli slope at the base near Marco Polo, a green area at the top of the main gondola by the Snow Park, Bombora at the top of the Soliko chairlift, the White Rabbit carpet below the Snow Park chairlift, and a short carpet slope in New Gudauri itself.
That has an advantage and a cost. The advantage is that you are not confined to one crowded strip of snow for three days: as soon as you can turn and stop you can ride up and ski the same views as everyone else. The cost is that reaching some of it means taking a lift, and because there are no trees the runs are wide and cross over one another. Photograph the piste map on your first morning and use it. Most people find the mountain makes sense on about day three.
The other thing that shapes learning here is the light. The slopes get a lot of sun, which builds confidence. But no trees means no contrast, so when cloud comes in the light goes flat and the ground in front of you stops having a shape. That is the hardest part of learning to ski here, and it is a lens problem before it is a skill problem. Carry a low-light or yellow goggle lens, or hire one.
The lift day is shorter than you expect
Lifts in the Gudauri and Kobi areas run daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and ticket offices stop selling passes 30 minutes before the lifts stop. Those are the operator's own published hours: M.T.A., the Mountain Trails Agency, which runs the Gudauri lifts, states them in its FAQ, checked on 2 September 2026.
Seven hours sounds generous until you plan a beginner's day inside it. A morning group lesson takes the first two, and most first-timers are finished after three or four hours on snow. The real shape of a learning day is a lesson, lunch, an hour or two practising what you were just taught, and stopping while it is still fun.
Night skiing runs on Friday and Saturday evenings, 20:00 to 22:00. Two things to know before you count on it: a daily ski pass does not include night skiing, and M.T.A. sells it as a separate category.
Lessons, and the booking trap
Three of the schools in our directory publish enough detail to plan around, and they differ in ways that matter when you have never skied. All of the following was read on each school's own site on 2 September 2026.
- Ski Gudauri is introducing adult group ski and snowboard lessons for winter 2027, at two levels only: First Timers and Beginners. Groups are capped at six, run from 10am to 12pm, need a minimum of three people per level to go ahead, and are sold as two, three, four or five session packages. Adult groups take ages 13 and up; five to twelve year olds go to the children's groups. New courses start every Sunday of the season
- WinterGudauri teaches half days of two and a half hours, either 10:30 to 13:00 or 13:30 to 16:00, and full days of five hours from 10:30 to 16:00. Its group lessons are private groups only, so you book a group rather than join one
- Vagabond Ski School teaches in English first in every lesson, and its instructors hold certifications from APUL, PSIA, BASI and APSI. Its minimum age is five, and it gives the reason plainly: the beginner rope tow needs muscle and coordination that children tend to develop at about that age
The booking trap is that Sunday start. If joining an open group is the reason you chose Gudauri and you arrive on a Tuesday, you are either waiting until the following Sunday or paying for private tuition instead. Check it before you book flights.
On cost, WinterGudauri publishes 105 euros for a half day for one person, falling to 75 euros per person in a group of four or five, with equipment hire at 18 euros a day on top. Prices move, so read the current figure on the school's own page before you budget.
All of these are independent businesses. You book with the school, and the price and the terms are agreed between you and them. Altimera keeps the ski school list and the ski hire list current and can make an introduction, but is not an agent for any of them.
Two things that catch first-timers out
Insurance. WinterGudauri says on its own site that its students are not covered by insurance and recommends sports insurance that works overseas. That is a fair description of the situation generally, not a quirk of one school. Check that your travel policy covers skiing before you fly, and read what it says about leaving the marked pistes.
The ski pass is a physical card. M.T.A. requires the physical pass at the turnstile: an electronic ticket or a QR code will not get you through. A purchased pass cannot be cancelled or refunded, cannot be shared between two people, and a lost personal pass has to be reported at the ticket office within 24 hours. Children under six use the lifts free, the child category is six to twelve inclusive and junior is thirteen to eighteen.
How to plan a beginner's week
- Book lessons before you travel. Leaving it to the first morning is how you lose the best half of your best day
- Arrive the day before your course starts, and check which day that is. For Ski Gudauri's open groups it is a Sunday
- Do not book a lesson for the morning after you land. Gudauri is about two and a half hours from Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway, and flights into Tbilisi often arrive at night
- Take the lesson in the morning and practise the same afternoon on the same terrain. Instruction you do not use within a few hours mostly evaporates
- Stay within walking distance of a lift. An Altimera studio is a three and a half minute walk from the gondola, which matters more to a beginner than to anyone else: you can go back at lunchtime, or when your legs have finished, without giving up the rest of the day
One warning before you fix dates: the 30% deposit taken on booking is non-refundable.
Still choosing a week? When to ski Gudauri, month by month sets out what each part of the season delivers, and March is usually the kindest for a beginner. For the journey, getting from Tbilisi to Gudauri in winter. For the season and the apartments, the winter page and the collection.
