Gudauri to Kazbegi as a day trip

Kazbegi, which means the town of Stepantsminda and the Gergeti Trinity Church above it, is the natural day trip out of Gudauri: it sits on the same highway, on the far side of the Jvari Pass. Georgia's Agency of Protected Areas puts that pass 5 km from Gudauri and 30 km from Stepantsminda, and in winter the stretch between Gudauri and Kobi is the section of highway the authorities close when avalanche danger is high, so the trip is decided on the morning, not the night before.

Every fact below was checked on 14 September 2026 against the source named beside it. Where no source worth quoting exists, this page says so rather than guessing.

Where is Kazbegi, relative to Gudauri?

Kazbegi is the municipality, and it is also the old name of its main town, now officially Stepantsminda. Gergeti is the village across the river, below the church. We untangle the three names in where to eat in Kazbegi; for a day trip, treat them as one destination.

The road is the Georgian Military Highway, which official notices call the Mtskheta to Stepantsminda to Larsi highway. From Gudauri it climbs north over the Jvari Pass (jvari means cross, and some English-language park pages call it the Cross Pass), drops past the village of Kobi, and continues to Stepantsminda. The Agency of Protected Areas gives the distance from Stepantsminda to Kobi as 20 km.

How long does the drive from Gudauri to Kazbegi take?

We do not publish a figure. We have found no source for it we would want quoted back to someone planning a winter day. The drive time we do stand behind, about 2.5 hours from Tbilisi to Gudauri, says nothing about the road beyond the resort.

Ask whoever is driving you for that day's estimate when you book, and again on the morning. On this road the variable is not the distance. It is the pass.

Does the road over the Jvari Pass close in winter?

Yes, and it is the most important thing to know before planning this trip in winter.

On 13 January 2026, Georgia's Roads Department, citing the National Environmental Agency, suspended all traffic on the Gudauri to Kobi section, between kilometres 93 and 107 of the highway, because the avalanche risk had been assessed as high. At the same time the Mleta to Gudauri section was restricted to non-stop transit, meaning vehicles could pass through without stopping.

It is not a new pattern. In November 2018 the Ministry of Internal Affairs published a Roads Department statement that the same section was closed to all vehicles while avalanche hazard was active, with clearing to begin only once the National Environmental Agency lifted the alert.

What that means for a guest:

  • Check the morning's road announcements before you commit to the day. A clear sky in Gudauri does not mean the pass is open
  • Do not pay for anything in Kazbegi that you cannot move. A table, a guide or a ride booked for a fixed time is what gets wasted
  • Keep a second plan that does not cross the pass. Gudauri is on the near side, so a day at the resort itself does not need it
  • Settle the return before the outbound journey starts. A closure can come in during the day as easily as overnight

Can you take the lift to Kobi instead of driving?

M.T.A., the company that runs the Gudauri lifts, describes on its own website a 45 minute scenic lift ride connecting the resort to Kobi. Read that carefully: it takes you over the pass to Kobi, not into Stepantsminda, which is still 20 km away.

That page does not say whether people on foot can ride it, what it costs, or when it runs, so ask at the resort before building a day on it.

What is there to see around Stepantsminda?

The distances below are the Agency of Protected Areas' own. They are distances, not driving times.

  • Gergeti Trinity Church. A 14th century church 6 km from Stepantsminda. Georgia's national tourism site gives its altitude as 2,200 metres and offers two ways up: a local cab or an uphill walk
  • Gveleti Waterfall. In the Dariali Gorge near Gveleti village, 7 km from Stepantsminda. The last 700 metres are on foot
  • The Dariali Gorge. It runs 11 km from the mouth of the Chkheri river at Stepantsminda to Upper Larsi
  • Truso Gorge. Reached from the Kobi side rather than from town, 25 km from Kobi, with mineral springs and glaciers
  • Juta. The highest inhabited village in the Kazbegi municipality, at 2,200 metres, 24 km from Stepantsminda, near Chaukhi, which reaches 3,688 metres

Gergeti anchors almost every Kazbegi day. Truso and Juta lie in different directions from it, so adding either means covering a second distance on the same day, over the same pass, before the light goes.

How do you get there, if Altimera does not drive you?

Altimera does not operate or arrange transport. Guests book directly with an operator, and the arrangement, and the accountability for it, sits between the guest and that business.

  • A private driver for the day. The drivers and transfer companies in our directory publish their own contact details. Tell them it is a day trip with stops, and agree the return time and the price before you set off
  • Bolt, the ride-hailing app. Bolt lists Gudauri and Stepantsminda as one of its cities on its own website, with an SUV, a six-seat Delica and a standard four-seat car among its categories. A listing is not a guarantee that a car will be free on a winter afternoon, so do not rely on it for the journey back
  • Local buses once you are in Stepantsminda. Mountain Travel Agency, a guiding company in the town (not to be confused with M.T.A., the lift operator), publishes a fare of 45 GEL per person for a round trip to any destination in the Kazbegi region, booked online, on WhatsApp or at its office on Kazbegi Street. That page gives no timetable or season, so ask first

Where should you eat in Kazbegi?

In short, from each restaurant's own channel on 9 September 2026: of the four places in where to eat in Kazbegi and Stepantsminda, three publish their hours, and all three close at 22:00. A late lunch fits a day trip. Dinner means crossing the pass in the dark, which is a decision to make before you leave Gudauri.

Planning the rest of the week

The same road brings you up from the capital, covered in Tbilisi to Gudauri in winter. For how the season runs, read when to ski Gudauri, month by month; for the resort itself, the Gudauri guide.

If Kazbegi is part of the trip, check dates for the apartments and keep one flexible day in the week for it. That spare day, more than any driver or restaurant, is what makes this trip work.
