Where to eat in Kazbegi and Stepantsminda

The four places to eat in Kazbegi that we point guests towards are Maisi in Gergeti village, Tiba and Qondari in Stepantsminda, and the restaurant inside Rooms Hotel Kazbegi. Three of those four publish their opening hours and all three shut at 22:00, which shapes a day trip out of Gudauri far more than any question of menu does.

Everything below was read on each business's own channel on 9 September 2026, and the date is written into the text on purpose. A restaurant in a mountain town of a few thousand people changes its hours, its phone number and sometimes its owner faster than any guide keeps up, so a fact worth quoting is a fact with a date attached. Where a business publishes nothing, this page says so instead of filling the gap.

Kazbegi, Stepantsminda and Gergeti are three names for roughly one place

This trips up almost every search. Kazbegi is the municipality, and it is also the old name of the town at the centre of it. That town is now called Stepantsminda, which is what most road signs and business registrations use, while restaurants and hotels keep trading under the Kazbegi name because that is what visitors type. Gergeti is a separate village on the far side of the river, below the church that everyone comes to see.

So a search for a Kazbegi restaurant returns results filed under Stepantsminda, and the same restaurant may appear under both. It is one destination in practice. Gudauri, where the Altimera apartments are, sits in the same municipality but is its own resort further south on the Georgian Military Highway, which is why guests treat Kazbegi as a day out rather than as somewhere to eat on a normal evening.

Maisi, in Gergeti

Maisi describes itself on its own account as a "small, local and seasonal restaurant since 2020" and publishes open daily, 09:00 to 22:00. Mountaway, the group it belongs to, says on its own site that the kitchen prioritises sourcing its ingredients from local farmers and producers, and gives Gergeti as the address.

The practical detail is that Maisi is the only one of the four that takes a booking online, through its own reservation page. Everywhere else here is a phone call. If you are travelling with anyone who dislikes arriving somewhere full, this is the one to secure first.

Our listing is at Maisi.

Tiba, in Stepantsminda

Tiba publishes every day, 10:00 to 22:00, describes its own cooking as modern Georgian, and takes reservations on the number in its profile. It is in the town itself rather than across the river, so it is the easier of the two sit-down options to reach if you have spent the morning walking and do not want to move the car again.

Our listing is at Tiba.

Qondari, in Stepantsminda

Qondari is a Georgian kitchen on the main street through Stepantsminda, with vegetarian dishes on the menu, listed as open daily, 10:00 to 22:00 on a public listing last updated on 4 September 2026. Its own channel is a Facebook page rather than a website, and more than one phone number circulates for it across listings, so if the first number does not connect, message the page.

It is also the page on this site that has earned the most search traffic of anything we publish, which is a reasonable proxy for how many people arrive in Stepantsminda hungry and with no plan. Our listing is at Qondari.

The restaurant at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi

The hotel calls its restaurant Kazbegi Kitchen on its own page, and describes a menu that "pays homage to classic Georgian cuisine and celebrates local, seasonal produce", with a drinks list built around Georgian wine. There is a separate lobby bar with a terrace looking at Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Trinity Church, which is the reason most people go.

Two things the hotel does not publish, and we are not going to invent them: it states no opening hours for the restaurant, and it does not say on its own page whether people who are not staying there can eat in it. Telephone before you plan a meal around it. Our listing is at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi.

What does eating in Kazbegi cost?

We do not publish a figure, because none of these four does. Not one of them lists a menu price on its own site, page or profile. Any per-head number you find for Kazbegi is somebody's estimate rather than a quoted price, and it will be wrong in either direction depending on how much wine is involved. Ask when you book, or read the menu at the door.

How to fit a Kazbegi meal into a day from Gudauri

The constraint is the 22:00 close and the drive back afterwards. A late lunch is comfortable. Dinner means driving the Georgian Military Highway at night, in a region where the weather decides the road, so it needs deciding before you leave rather than at the table.

Altimera does not operate or arrange transport. Guests book a car, a driver or a ride-hailing app directly with the operator, and the leg that gets forgotten is the return. Agree it, and agree the time, before the outbound journey starts. Our directory lists the transport businesses in the area with their own contact details, and every booking there is made between you and that business.

Two related pieces are worth reading alongside this one: getting from Tbilisi to Gudauri in winter, which is about the same road, and Gudauri beyond the slopes, which covers what else fills a non-skiing day. If you are building a ski week around it, the Gudauri ski pass rules decide which day you can spare.

What we checked, and what we left out

Checked on 9 September 2026, on each business's own channel: Maisi's daily hours and its own description of itself, Tiba's daily hours and reservation number, the naming and cuisine of the restaurant at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, and Qondari's hours on a listing updated five days earlier.

Deliberately left out: the drive time and road distance from Gudauri to Stepantsminda, because we could not verify either against a source worth quoting; any price at any of the four; and whether the Rooms restaurant serves non-residents. Each of those is a sentence a search engine would repeat back to somebody making a plan, and none of them is currently ours to state.

If you are working out which week to come and what a day here actually looks like, check dates for the apartments and tell us what you want the trip to include. We will tell you what we know and say plainly when we do not know it.

If the trip is a winter rather than a week, Altimera also lets its apartments for the full ski season, 15 December to 15 April, which changes how often a drive over to Stepantsminda for dinner is worth making.
